Dear... Music Fairy? DJ? Euterpe, Muse of Song? Well, whoever you are, I'm stoked as always. Below are some ODAOs and general thoughts about my likes and dislikes but please don't feel too constrained by any of 'em.
Stuff I like:
- Period pieces, the more detailed the better
- Lyrical prose bordering on the purple
- Poetry
- Mythology/folklore wank
- Steampunk
- Travel narratives
- Scenery porn
- Porn porn (vanilla is fine, kinky is fine, non-/dubcon is fine for specified prompts, just no excrement or hardcore guro/body mod stuff.)
DNWs:
- Especially heavy angst (melancholy is great, total gloom and doom less so)
- Abovementioned porn dealbreakers
Song: Meet Me Halfway - Black-Eyed Peas (Music Video)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7HahVwYpwo
Lyrics link: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/blackeyedpeas/meetmehalfway.html
Genre: Rap
Some kind of sweet Afrofuturistic fairy tale? The stories of all of the characters and how they came to be searching for each other? Maybe the story of just one character? (I'm especially interested in desert mystic apl.de.alp and how he got in touch with the others, although elephant-riding interplanetary explorer will.i.am is pretty fuckin' awesome too.) Everyone as personifications of the celestial bodies they seem to be inhabiting, maybe in a divine sense, and their interactions with those spheres as well as each other? The video for this is just among my very favorites ever and I would dearly love to see anything you can come up with for it.
Song: The Tower - Bruce Dickinson (Song)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVTeN4xs7Do (sorry there's not a better quality video that I could find)
Lyrics link: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/brucedickinson/thetower.html
Genre: Heavy metal
So you're welcome to go to the video for this one, or to the tarot symbolism suggested by the chorus (a choice to be made under tumultuous, changing circumstances involving the division of positive-masculine and negative-feminine forces, details subject to change depending on what interpretations of the cards in question you like.) As such, you're welcome to make it as literal or as metaphorical as you want - honestly I'd be just as happy with a story about two lovers stuck in a tower surrounded by these mysterious people/symbols as with the above outline suggestion, as well as with something about the two trying to make their way to the top of the titular tower as a scary puppet watches their progress and Bruce Dickinson narrates the whole thing.
Song: Tenacious Love - Qntal (Music Video)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGL79l51gDs
Lyrics link: http://lyrics.wikia.com/wiki/Qntal:Tenacious_Love
Genre: Folk/Techno (I guess?)
As far as the music video goes, I do get a very strong fairy revel vibe - perhaps the lady outside the house is one of those mortals who gets caught up by the Fair Folk and parties herself to death, or at least ends up Rip van Winkleing herself many years into the future. Alternately, the fact that she seems to be excluded from/on the outskirts of the celebration might suggest her being an outcast of whatever clan/family/group of period-costumed weirdos meets in this old house to party, and a story exploring why she's lurking around out there in a cloak could be interesting. In any case, as long as there's a lot of costume porn and lovingly detailed description I'm sure I'll love whatever story you come up with for this exceptionally beautiful video.
Song: Out of the Shadows - Iron Maiden (Song)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqE2GFDlc6w
Lyrics link: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ironmaiden/outoftheshadows.html
Genre: Heavy metal
Okay, let's make this clear up front: If you're familiar with Patricia McKillip's Ombria in Shadow and just write me songfic of that I will give you my firstborn. If you aren't, however, any story that's along the lines of "hope and growth from something old and crumbling" would be absolutely lovely. Are "a gypsy's [sic] child" (interpret/switch out terminology as you feel comfortable with) and "a king for a day" the same person, or if not, how are they related to each other? Are the titular shadows literal (an evil fantasy Dark Lord being overthrown, some kind of Persephone-esque cthonic journey ending) or metaphorical (a long, hopeless period in one person's life improving, that writ large for a whole group of people/civilization, etc.)? Also, as far as I'm concerned you really can't go wrong with anything that takes place in ruins/remains of old places, whether just abandoned parts of an otherwise still-functional city or somewhere abandoned for centuries, so if ambiance/setting is a good jumping-off point for you I'd encourage starting there.
Song: The Mystic's Dream - Loreena McKennitt (Song)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFAfWH_CKVw
Lyrics link: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/loreenamckennitt/themysticsdream.html
Genre: Celtic/New Age
Obviously the dream/vision itself is a big question (what does the painting show? who is the "you" she's referring to? is it who she's paying homage to, or someone else besides her love? is she necessarily a she?) which you are welcome to answer in as much or as little detail as possible. Additionally, desert-related fantasy is My Jam, so anything about the place the mystic is seeing/bound for would almost certainly be right up my alley, especially coupled with the framework of religious/spiritual devotion and just the ambiance of the lyrics generally.
Song: The Siren - Nightwish (Song)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6scMN_pR80I
Lyrics link: https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/nightwish/thesiren.html
Genre: Operatic metal
Some kind of Odyssey AU riff on this might be fun, given the title and the mention of tying one's self to a wheel (Marco the sailor/Tarja the siren is a not unappealing thought, with or without the Homeric connections.) If you're not feeling that, I'd love to hear about either the woman with the seals (why does she play to them? are they her children or servants or something? is she doing the calling or the one being called?) or the sailor (what fate would he see in the stars, if he could? is the music distracting him from that? how do these two fit together anyway?) in whatever capacity you can come up with, separately or together.
Anyway. Thanks for signing up, thanks for bearing with me this long and I'm seriously stoked for whatever gift(s) I have coming. <3/Mari
